The stair lifts can make for a more enjoyable life inside your home. The loss of mobility inside your own house can be devastating for you and your caregiver. The chair lifts can also ease the minds of your loved ones that live away from you.

You can now access rooms and even whole floors that may have been off limits to you without the chair lift. The chair lifts of today are designed to help give you back your independence. There are several different features all with different price ranges that should make one appropriate for each situation and budget. There is the indoor and then the out door chair lift. There is the straight and the curved chair lifts. It is important also that that these units meet a few requirements before we would want to take them inside our house. A few to consider is first of all the cosmetic appearance. They must look agreeable to the eyes as well as have a great work performance. No one would want a noisy piece of equipment inside the house that would disturb the other occupants. Along with the beauty and quietness, you will need a unit that can be dependable for several years of service to you or your loved one.

The chair lifts are ran off of DC battery power. The batteries are recharged after the use of the lift. The safety feature of batteries are no trailing wires with the added bonus of contributing to the overall cosmetic appearance of dangling, ugly wires. This also allows for use even in the event of a power outage. The lifts of today are very cost efficient and operate on a very low voltage. Another great feature of the chair lift is you can lift almost anything, not just a person. Great for helping with other items such as groceries, laundry or luggage.

A reconditioned stair lift may be a better investment if you plan to use the lift for a long period or even temporarily for a short period of time. Events like joint surgery or an injury might be a typical situation of a short time need. The cost of the reconditioned lift is often hundreds of dollars cheaper then a new unit. This reduced price could make the difference of someone having to move out of their home or could save money on remodeling costs. Make sure the reconditioned unit will match your stairs and the user needs. Determine which side of the stairs you will need to place the lift on. Being the new lifts are designed for the specific weight of the new owner, make sure there is no issue or the need for certain weight concerns. Can the newest owner use the lift or is there any physical limitations to be addressed. Some states have very stringent stair lift regulations and may require a certified professional to do the install and then to have an inspection.   Another great idea, if you need a way to transport your motorized or light weight wheelchair, try Harmar Scooter Lifts.  With a lift to fit almost every vehicle, these is one for your car.  Harmar Scooter Lifts also has a wide varity of ramps also.

Selecting a light weight wheelchair can be a bit overwhelming. The two basic types are Standard Wheel Chair and the Transport Wheel Chair. The standard wheel chair is distinguished by the two large wheels an the back with the two smaller caster wheels in front.

The standard wheel chair is most often propelled by the user or this chair can be pushed by a companion. The transport wheel chair has all four smaller caster type wheels and can not be propelled by the user but has to be pushed by a companion. The lighter the chair the easier it is to be propelled by the user or pushed by the companion. The weight of the chair will of course determine how difficult it will be to carry up the stairs or pick up and place in the trunk of a car. The standard wheel chair will generally have a weight capacity of 250 pounds. If the user needs a stronger chair, the heavy duty or bariatric wheel chair can support up to 500 pounds.

The width and depth is used to measured the seat size. Most wheel chairs will come in different sizes, the standard size is usually 18 inches wide and 16 inches deep ( 18” x 16” ). To determine accurate measurement for the hips—while sitting down, measure the distance for one hip across to the other hip. Add one to two inches on each side to allow for a comfortable fit, for example the extra space you might need for wearing a thicker and heavy coat. Measurement of the seat depth is from the back of the seat to around one or two inches behind the knee, while sitting down of course. The seat height is measured from the seat to the floor. A seat that is too high will give the user a hard time of entering and exiting the chair. The seat being too low will have the users feet dragging the floor. Proper seat measurement can be obtained by the user sitting down and measure the length from the bind in the knee to the heel. It is important to add one to two inches for clearance but subtract the cushion thickness. Seat cushions are recommended.

Arm rests provide shoulder and arm support. There are four basic types of arm rest. Fixed or Permanent. Adjustable. Removable. Flip-Back. There are also combinations. The length of the arm rest is either full length or the shorter desk length that allows for the user to sit closer to a desk or table. Leg rests will elevate the leg so it has a calf pad. The foot rest does not allow for the legs to be elevated. Both are available in the swing-away design that can be moved from the normal position directly in front of the chair and allows for ease of access in and out of the wheel chair seat.  If the inside of your house you may want to consider if the need for a stair lift is needed.  Some of the reconditioned stair lifts can be quiet a bit cheaper then the newer ones.  This will help not to worry about your loved one on the stairs.
